Let's go over a few versions: Windows 1.0, Windows 2.0, Windows/286, Windows/386, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows NT 3.5, Windows NT 4, Windows 98, Windows SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows CE, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. I guess calling it Windows 19 would indicate how they can't seem to get it right.

New Blog

Quicker and easier for those on the fly moments. Pending home computing (yeah right, Telefonica *might* make it to install your phone line in 2009. If you're lucky) this will be the next phase of db on the web...

Good points are it's nice and easy RSS, and interface-wise as simple as clicking a link. Bad points (depending on ones' perspective of course) are that it eschews the personal touch in favour of the speed, to a degree. We'll see.

So, till further notice that's where you'll find me :)

Mans Origin : The Puzzle

In February of 1996, NBC broadcast a controversial one-hour special entitled ‘The Mysterious Origins of Man’ – Running time 47 minutes – Go watch it. It's Indiana Jones-meets-The X-Files in this intriguing program that tackles the age-old question "Where did we come from?" with added gravitas by narrator Charlton Heston. Interviews with numerous notaries of this “pseudo-science” reveal interesting facts – but it’s the conclusions that everyone argues about. Isn’t that typical?

I caught a Penn & Teller show the other night where they were (rightly so) lambasting the moronic actions of the religious right in seeking to have the religious creationism afforded the same merit as Darwinian theory in the teachings of American children; they succeeded. (!) As a result, biology texts now contain in effect a disclaimer as to their being more than one alternative as to how we all ended up here.

On the one hand, I don’t disapprove – the whole ‘missing link’ bollocks has run far too long with no end in sight to allow Darwin to be credited with anything more than a passing allowance of the possibility of being correct -  I don’t go for the whole 7 days shebang either – indeed, one can understand why Darwin were afforded the credence he was in the face of a 7-day creation story as an alternative – but on the other hand, the acceptance that there is more than one plausible theory now means un-favouredalternatives receiving more exposure.

Fatboy Slims' : New Song

Fatboy Slims' new song (Old new) is out - up on his myspace site - and the juggling entries have been shortlisted - check them out, they're worth it. I must say, I really like the direction FBS seems to be heading in at the moment - funky with an 'F' sort of thing; the last album was just fantastic. Vic keeps yelling at me to stop singing. "And the sign said, long-haired-freaky-people need-not-apply..." (Number 7 gets my vote, Number 9 reminds me of Craigs' juggling, and Hula Girl and number 1 are both very very well done. Bugger, so is number 10.)

Zidane : Apologises

After all the fuss that has been going on since the world cup, the only question that remains unanswered is what was said to Zidane to make him headbutt Materazzi.

This evening he held a small press conference and asked for forgiveness for his behavior from all the children who watched it - But he still refused to say exactly what was said to him, except that it was very personal and was something to do with his mother and sister.

So The BBC has employed the services of a lip reader to try and figure out what was actually said. Apparently, it was something along the lines of “An ugly death to you and your family” To which Zidane replied with, the classic “Go fuck yourself” before dropping him.

Materazzi of course denies making any such statement about his mother, but won’t reveal what he said either. Now FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, has hinted that he might be striped of his best player award; I am sure that there will be more to come out over this story; It’s taken over more news headlines than Italy actually winning the bloody cup.

It's not a stretch to consider the competition aspect of Top Gear getting into bed with horsepower for real, but still. Usually it's restricted to Captain Slow and the hamster on the public transport side of things! Thirty seconds later my ambulance, my patient, my crewmate and most importantly *myself* were 200 yards down the road behind some houses and a very solid brick wall.

Policemen with big guns appeared from nowhere and they laid plans about what to do about the situation. To cut a long story short, the police negotiated the release of a child from the house and after around seven hours the siege was ended peacefully. My patient managed to smoke all of one policeman's cigarettes.

Now to reply to two comments that initially don't seem related.

A somewhat snide remark. The police don't go around looking to shoot people, despite what the media may lead you to believe. Whenever I've been involved with armed police I've been impressed by the pure professionalism that they show. They are anything but looking for brown-skinned people to shoot. People who make such pronouncements don't understand how confused a scene can get, with differing intelligence, hearsay, rumour and lines of communication suffering from Chinese whispers.

Related to the above comment, this is an example of how the media works. The operation went off without a hitch - no one was shot, there were no interesting pictures of irate kidnappers. The only injury was someone who had been punched in the mouth.

In 2002 the armed police were called out 2,490 times in London alone.

How many times was this reported in the media?

It's only a story if someone gets shot.

This is why the public have an imbalanced view that the police enjoy shooting people. You never hear of all the lives that have been saved because of their attendance.

The reason why blogs such as mine are so popular is because they tell you the stories that aren't interesting enough for mainstream media to dedicate time to. We humanise the jobs that are often just 'nameless men in uniforms'. Perhaps we need an armed police blog... “
